 Australian beef is safe Australian beef is safe, and consumers should not be concerned about the meat available to them at the supermarket, the butcher, the restaurants, the hamburger shop or anywhere else, Nationals Leader, Warren Truss said today. Mr Truss said he was alarmed by reports that some consumers had stopped buying beef because of their worries about proposed imports. “While the Labor Government has announced changes to allow beef to come to Australia from countries that have had a history of BSE, no beef has yet been imported into Australia under the new protocol and will not for many months – at least. “Nothing has changed about the quality of beef in Australia, it is as good and safe as ever,” said Mr Truss. “The Nationals have concerns about the way in which the Rudd Government has handled the beef imports issue and the processes to be followed in the future. It seems that we will import a problem as well as beef if we import from countries with a BSE history. “Perhaps the worst thing of all is the fact the Agriculture Minister, Tony Burke, has gone missing in action on this issue. Despite being one of the four Labor frontbenchers involved in the announcement last year, we have heard nothing from Mr Burke. The whole issue is being handled by other departments, leaving farmers worried. “Labor’s commentary has been left to Trade Minister Simon Crean, leading many people to the conclusion that the new arrangements are all about trade deals rather than food safety and the future of the Australian beef industry and food safety. “The Coalition believes that imported beef must be subjected to the same stringent standards that apply to our own beef producers and processors – and imported beef should be labelled with its country of origin. “I’ll be eating beef today and tomorrow and any other day. It is safe. There is nothing on the shelves that has come from a country that has ever had BSE. When we have a “country of origin” labelling scheme I will choose Australian – because it is the best value,” Mr Truss said. |
