 The Coalition's plan to reduce traffic congestion in Melbourne JOINT PRESS RELEASE THE HON. TONY ABBOTT MHR, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION & THE HON. WARREN TRUSS MHR, LEADER OF THE NATIONALS AND SHADOW MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT A Coalition Government will kick-start funding of the East West Link with a $1.5 billion commitment. The commitment is part of the Coalition’s $4 billion Plan to Reduce Traffic Congestion. Inadequate road infrastructure and traffic congestion are having a negative impact on the productivity of Melbourne. Parents are away from their families for longer and businesses and consumers are paying more in transportation costs. Sir Rod Eddington’s East West Link Needs Report estimated that the Link would carry about 100,000 vehicles a day. The State Government is already undertaking necessary planning and assessments for the Link. We recognise that the East West Link is a large project and it will become a reality with a Commonwealth contribution. We want this project moving within 18 months of an election and we will work closely with the State Government to ensure it happens. Funding for our major road commitments will be met from the Nation Building programme and responsible budget savings. The timing of payments for this project will depend on construction progress and will be developed in consultation with the State Government. The first year of funding for the Coalition’s Plan to Reduce Traffic Congestion will be 2014-15. Background The project is an 18km link between the Eastern Freeway and the Western Ring Road. The project includes: * an 8km section linking the Eastern Freeway to the Tullamarine Freeway, with a connection to the Port of Melbourne; and * a 10km section linking the Port of Melbourne to West Footscray and West Footscray to the Western Ring Road. The East-West Link was first identified in Sir Rod Eddington’s East West Link Needs Assessment report in 2008. This report estimated the East-West Link would carry around 100,000 vehicles per day.
