More regional air services get carbon tax chop
“LABOR’S July 1 carbon tax and axing of the En-Route Navigation Rebate Scheme are already claiming victims with the announcement that daily air passenger services connecting Brisbane to Armidale and Canberra to Albury will be terminated,” Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Warren Truss said today.

“Canberra’s Brindabella Airlines has today confirmed that the carbon tax and the removal of the En-Route Rebate Scheme, both Labor imposts coming into effect from 1 July this year, are “major factors in the company’s decision” to drop its Brisbane-Armidale and Canberra-Albury services.

“Brindabella’s decision follows an announcement by Rex earlier this month that it will stop flying from Griffith to Melbourne for the same reasons.

“Regional airlines have warned for months that the loss of the En-Route Navigation Rebate Scheme and the carbon tax would lead to the closure of local air services.

“The loss of regional air services is a body blow for local communities who, separated by vast distances, rely on regional flights to connect with family and business interests, as well as healthcare services.

“They will be reeling, feeling stranded and forgotten by a government that simply does not understand the reality of life outside of a capital city.

“Rex has also flagged more cuts, warning that numerous routes will come under intense scrutiny once the full impact of Labor’s tax regime has been assessed.

“Julia Gillard and Greg Combet’s impression of the artful dodger isn’t fooling anyone. They duck, weave and tell bare-faced lies insisting that it’s not their fault, that their carbon tax is not to blame for companies cutting services and shedding jobs.

“But as we near the carbon tax deadline on 1 July, businesses and their employees across the country are as one – bracing for the hit and making decisions accordingly.

“And, yet again, it is regional Australians who feel the pinch first and hardest.”
