Wide Bay region aged care beds allocation cut
The Rudd Labor Government has slashed the number of new aged care beds to be made available this year to Wide Bay by 60, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said today.

The number of new beds allocated to the Wide Bay region has fallen from 200 in 2008-09 to 140 in 2009-10.

“It is difficult to have any confidence that even these 140 places promised for this financial year will be delivered, after the Rudd Government only provided 120 beds out of the 200 it had promised to the Wide Bay region for last financial year,” Mr Truss said.

“These cuts, combined with our growing population, will precipitate a crisis in an already stressed aged care system.”

The Wide Bay planning region extends from Bundaberg to Curra and inland to Monto and Nanango and includes the towns of Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Murgon, Wondai, Kingaroy, Mundubbera and Gayndah.

“It is incredible that at a time when the Government is sounding the warnings of Australia’s aging population, that Labor would cut the number of beds it will make available in a high growth region such as ours,” Mr Truss said.

“Aged care providers have been warning the Government about the seriously declining viability of the sector, but the Government has responded by cutting funding and cutting places,” Mr Truss said.

“It is clear that Minister Elliot is completely out of touch with the urgent need to provide new care services in ageing communities like Wide Bay.”
