Coalition acts on the environment – Labor taxes everyone
The Nationals in Coalition support direct and practical action to improve the environment and combat climate change – not a tax on everything as proposed by the Rudd Labor Government.

The Coalition’s climate action policy unveiled today by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott provides the opportunity for families and businesses around Australia to be rewarded for reducing emissions, said Nationals Leader Warren Truss.

“This is far superior to Kevin Rudd’s approach of imposing a giant new Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) tax onto the cost of everything from energy prices to food,” Mr Truss said.

“It fits with The Nationals view that regional Australia will play a key role in reducing emissions and producing green energy. It fits with our long-held policy that we should be retaining jobs and investment in Australia, not exporting them.

“The Coalition’s direct action approach will easily achieve the same 5 percent reduction in emissions from 1990 levels by 2020 as Labor proposes. The key difference is how you get there, and whether you slug the Australian people in doing so.

“The cost of the Coalition’s scheme over the first four years is $3.2 billion. It will protect jobs, not raise prices or impose any new or increased taxes on Australian households or businesses.

“Our scheme will reduce carbon emissions and help the environment. Labor’s scheme will export jobs, increase the cost of living and add further to Australia’s debt to the rest of the world.”

The Coalition will create a $2.5 billion Emissions Reduction Fund to support carbon reduction activities by business and industry from the middle of 2011. Businesses that reduce their emissions below their historic average will be able to offer this abatement for sale to the Government, offering them a financial incentive to take direct action on reducing emissions.

But those businesses that exceed their historical average will pay a financial penalty. Incentives will be provided to the oldest and least efficient.

The Coalition will improve soil carbon to help soil quality, farm productivity and water efficiency. We have a goal of an additional one million solar energy roofs by 2020, and allocations for towns and schools to access direct solar energy.

“In contrast, Labor’s discredited CPRS will drive up fuel and electricity prices, cost jobs particularly in regional areas and discourage investment in the industries that will drive Australia’s future. Household electricity prices will go up by $300 in the first two years – for businesses it will be even higher.

“Labor’s tax on everything will cost $40.6 billion over its first four years – 12 times the cost of the Coalition’s scheme – and all coming from your pocket. It will create a huge new bureaucracy and a market for rich bankers to trade pieces of paper backwards and forwards.

“This scheme gives Australian people and businesses a real opportunity to reduce emissions, without trashing our economy and lifestyles. Everyone can and should contribute,” Mr Truss said.
