Labor’s Carbon Tax Budget fails Cooroy to Curra

 8th May, 2012
Motorists travelling on the dangerous Cooroy to Curra section of the Bruce Highway will feel cheated that the Gillard Labor Government has again failed to allocate any funds to begin the next stage of the four lane project, Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss said in response to tonight’s Budget.

“Labor is out of touch with the needs of local communities and the urgent need to build a safer, more efficient Bruce Highway,” Mr Truss said.

“Labor has publicly acknowledged that the Cooroy to Curra section is the most dangerous section of the whole Bruce Highway. But they do nothing to fix it.

“What will it take before Labor gets serious about finishing this project?

“Too many lives have been lost and too many families have been touched by the horror and tragedy of accidents along this notorious stretch of road.

“The road has reached its capacity and that is why motorists have had to endure the 90km/hr speed limit and overtaking restrictions and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

“Labor has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on its failed schemes and programs which would have been better directed to the Cooroy to Curra section and other projects along the Bruce Highway.”

“Labor’s failure to allocate funds in this Budget jeopardises the former Coalition Government’s timetable to complete the four lane upgrade between Cooroy and Curra by 2020. It also pushes out the construction of other Highway projects, including the upgrade of Curra to Maryborough and beyond, for decades to come,” Mr Truss said.
