Torbay gets Nationals’ nod in New England |
18th August, 2012 |
NEW South Wales Nationals have endorsed Richard Torbay unopposed as their candidate in the federal seat of New England for the next federal election.
“Today’s announcement caps off a stellar month for The Nationals announcing an outstanding contingent of local champions across regional NSW, following pre-selections confirmed in Lyne, Page, Richmond and Hunter… and more to come,” Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss said today.
“There can be no doubting Richard’s credentials.
“A fervent advocate for the Northern Tablelands in the NSW Parliament for 13 years, including four years as Speaker, Richard has earned the respect of the people he has steadfastly represented, going into bat for them and their interests.
“That’s what The Nationals are all about, strong local advocates who are passionate about their communities and want to work together as a team to improve outcomes for the people living in regional Australia.”
The Nationals leader welcomed Mr Torbay’s expertise and experience in business, local government and state government.
“He has proved he can work across all sectors and listens to the views of the community,” Mr Truss said. “His skills fit well with The Nationals’ agenda to represent rural and regional interests, which will be at the forefront of a future Coalition government.
“We will be fighting for better health, education and government services for the regions and to restore funding to the operating budget of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, which has been slashed from $3.8 billion to a mere $1.8 billion under Labor.
“On agricultural research and development many developing countries were now out-spending and out-smarting Australia. Meanwhile, according to IBIS World research, the carbon tax will strip $3.2 billion from the pockets of farmers in 2012-13 alone, ramping up to $3.7 billion next year and more the next. All the while Australia’s supermarkets continued to be flooded with cheaper, inferior imports.
“Foreign investors are unashamedly buying up Australian farms and agribusinesses to secure their own food security. And they can do so unchallenged as the Gillard government watches from the sidelines, doing nothing to protect Australia’s national interests.
“Having Richard Torbay as part of a strong Nationals team will ensure that the interests of the communities of the New England electorate and regional Australia will be well and truly on the table for the next Coalition Government.”
