Hollow man Rudd left standing for nothing |
28th April, 2010 |
Leader of The Nationals and Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren Truss today said that Kevin Rudd’s deferral of his planned emissions trading scheme until 2013 is more about window dressing for the upcoming election than responding to community concern about Labor’s plan for a great big new tax on everything.
“Mr Rudd’s plan for a great big new tax is still there, and my concern is that when he brings it back again in 2013 with a deal with The Greens, it will be bigger and greater than ever before,” Mr Truss said.
“This high wire backflip of grand proportions exposes Kevin Rudd as an emperor with no clothes. It crystallises everything that is wasteful, wrong and indecent about Kevin Rudd’s Labor Government,” Mr Truss said.
“It is incredible that Prime Minister Rudd, who declared climate change to be ‘the greatest moral and economic challenge of our time’, who tried to coerce the Liberal and National Parties with the threat of a double dissolution election if we did not pass Labor’s flawed Carbon Pollution Reduction tax before the Copenhagen conference, has now deferred the scheme until 2013.
“Kevin Rudd had hoped his Carbon Pollution Reduction tax would bring him international glory at Copenhagen, but it now brings him national embarrassment as he tries to shelve it as an election issue.
“For years Mr Rudd has lived and breathed his plan for a great big new tax and massive new bureaucracy, demanding immediate support from the Liberal and National Parties with artificial deadlines and empty threats. Kevin Rudd’s carbon tax deferral exposes his leadership as lacking courage and conviction.
“The deferral of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme legislation heightens uncertainty for Australian industry. The coal industry still does not know if it will get a great big new tax, the cattle industry does not know if it will get a great big new tax, the electricity industry does not know if it will get a great big new tax, and families, households and business still do not know if they face massive price hikes courtesy of Kevin Rudd’s great big new tax.
“Labor should follow the Liberal and National Parties lead and abandon the CPRS all together.
“At the 2007 election, Kevin07 stood for everything. But today his cowardice exposes him as a hollow man who stands for nothing.”
