Number of people claiming Centrelink benefits at Maryborough decreased in August
| 28th September, 2009
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits through Maryborough’s Centrelink office decreased by 77 in August, according to new figures released last week, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said today.|
Mr Truss cautiously welcomed the figures, but said it was too early to tell if it indicated the beginning of downward trend.
“The decrease in the number of people claiming benefits is encouraging news. While the unemployment rate is regarded as the official measure of unemployment, the number of people claiming benefits shows need within the community,” Mr Truss said
“There is much more work to be done if we are to get back to keeping unemployment at historic low levels seen under the former Liberal and Nationals Government.”
At the time of the election in November 2007, there were 1007 people in Maryborough receiving Centrelink unemployment benefits. The number of people claiming benefits for August 2009 was 1295, down from 1372 in July.
“We can ill-afford to lose any more jobs, yet the Bligh Labor Government has threatened the future of Downer EDI Rail by opening up a $2 billion tender to overseas bids,” Mr Truss said.
Mr Truss warned that the Rudd and Bligh Labor Governments debt poses a major threat to the economy, jobs and interest rates. The Rudd Labor Government’s debt will hit a record $315 billion, while Anna Bligh’s Labor Government will blow state debt out to an unprecedented $85 billion.
The Senate has heard that Rudd Labor Government’s debt funded $42 billion stimulus package has cost taxpayers $1.5 million for every job it has created.
“Free and easy spending is neither sustainable nor responsible. By going into massive debt and flooding the market with cash, inflation will go up, forcing the Reserve Bank to increase interest rates. Then taxes will go up to pay for interest on Labor’s debt, and debt and taxes are the enemy of unemployment.”
